How to Compare Laps in iRacing Without Chasing the Wrong Delta
Lap comparison sounds simple: place a faster lap over a slower lap and copy what is different. In practice, the choice of reference determines whether the comparison teaches you anything useful.
A personal best, a recent clean lap and an external baseline answer different questions. The best analysis begins by choosing the reference that matches the question you are trying to solve.
Use your personal best to study proven pace
Your PB is powerful because it proves that you can already produce the lap. If your current session is slower, comparing against the PB can reveal which pieces of your own driving disappeared.
The weakness is that a PB may be old, set in different conditions, or built from several unusually good corners that you cannot repeat consistently. It is evidence of capability, not necessarily the perfect coaching model.
Use a recent lap to study a specific change
A recent clean lap is often the best reference when testing technique. If you change brake release in Turn 5 and immediately compare the next lap, most other conditions remain similar. That makes cause and effect easier to see.
The recent lap may be slower overall than your PB, but it can be better for answering a narrow question because the comparison has less noise.
Use a baseline to expand what you think is possible
A good telemetry baseline introduces a successful execution you may not have produced yourself. It can reveal earlier rotation, a different brake-release shape, a later apex, a cleaner throttle commitment or simply a better sequence of inputs.
The purpose is not to clone the baseline. Use it to identify meaningful differences, then adapt the lesson to your car control and conditions.
Control the comparison before judging it
Fuel, tires, track temperature, traffic, tow, damage and incidents can all move a lap time without representing a driving improvement. If the reference and target lap are materially different in context, be cautious about small deltas.
Large, repeated corner differences are still informative, but do not redesign your driving around a few hundredths that may come from conditions rather than technique.
Compare the corner shape, not only the delta line
A delta trace tells you where one lap becomes faster, but not automatically why. Overlay speed, brake, throttle and steering around the same corner. Look for the earliest difference that plausibly changes the car's trajectory or available grip.
If the faster lap gains time on exit, the useful difference might be a brake release that occurred several seconds earlier. The delta is the map to the investigation, not the diagnosis itself.
A faster lap can contain slower corners
Whole-lap PBs are composites. A new PB might be three tenths faster overall while still losing a tenth in Turn 8. If you compare only total lap time, you can accidentally treat every corner in the PB as ideal.
Corner-by-corner comparison avoids that trap. Keep the good pieces from different laps and identify which execution is actually best in each part of the track.
Use sector comparison as a middle layer
Sectors are useful when corner-level analysis feels too granular. They show whether a group of corners is improving while still narrowing the search more than the whole-lap delta.
Once a sector stands out, zoom into the corners inside it. This creates a hierarchy: lap tells you the result, sector tells you the region, corner tells you the event, and telemetry tells you the cause.
Build your own reference library
The strongest reference system is not one lap forever. Keep a PB, recent clean laps and trusted external baselines available for different questions. As you improve, yesterday's personal reference may no longer represent how you want to drive the car.
A reference library turns improvement into a moving target rather than a one-time comparison. Your standard should evolve as your pace and consistency evolve.
